“The purpose in life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be passionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.
– RalphWaldo Emerson
(While this is attributed to Emerson, it may not be Emerson)
Regardless of it was Emerson or not, I’ve always questioned and disagreed with those who claimed that the purpose in life is to be happy. For me, when I feel like I’m making a significant difference in the lives of others, I’m passionate about somethings/someone, I’m being honorable to myself, loved ones and the Earth, and I feel useful in a number of ways, it is then I’m happiest and truly happy. Yes, I agree that you need to be passionate about something/someone. And definitely be helpful or feel like you are helpful or needed in some ways. Otherwise where is this happiness coming from? I don’t think you can be truly happy unless it involves another person directly or indirectly. And of course being able to share that with the world… This also relates to being selfless…
